The Talent Crisis: Who’s Delivering on Your Strategy?
By Leslie Braksick, Ph.D.
Today’s business environment is suffering from a lack of strong leaders who can make the hard choices. In fact, a recent study of 150 companies revealed that only 34 percent of those surveyed could accurately identify future leaders in their businesses. That figure is due, in large part, to the high degree of scrutiny senior leaders endure. Combine that number with recent reports that show employees losing confidence in their leadership, and you are faced with a tough business environment that shows no signs of easing anytime soon.
And all signs point to the fact that this difficult business environment is only getting worse: the global economy is increasing in complexity; and we face a decreasing population of potential leaders. The good news is that these challenges also represent opportunities for improvement in the ways talent is managed.
Clearly, it is more important than ever to treat talent management as an imperative, by bringing it to the strategic planning table. Strategic talent management requires much more than treating the symptoms with outdated HR remedies. It requires that your leaders essentially rethink the role that talent plays in your strategy execution, and fix their processes to make talent a priority, rather than an afterthought. Ask yourself:
- Do you track talent against business requirements?
- Do you identify talent gaps, and prioritize them?
- Do you actively manage people processes to close the gaps – including finding the right people, developing their skills, and managing their performance?
